Red Bench Speaker Series: Vermont's Churchill Ettinger; 40 Years of Ski Art

The Red Bench Speaker Series presents, Vermont's Churchill Ettinger; 40 Years of Ski Art, Thursday, November 14th at 7:00 PM via ZOOM.

Vermont’s own Churchill Ettinger (1903-1984) was one of the most accomplished and prolific painters of skiing in the 20th century. His painting career paralleled the post war development of recreational skiing in the United States from the late 1940's through the early 1980's. Skiing was the artist’s passion and in one three-year period in the 1960's he skied and painted 18 ski areas in five different countries.

Tom Ettinger and Curt Simonson will join us on the Red Bench.

Over the past two years Tom and Curt have cataloged over 150 examples of Ettinger’s ski art. They will discuss the artist’s career, show examples of his ski art, and share stories from his life and career.

Curt Simonson and his wife Kate have collected 20th century American ski art for nearly 20 years. Curt enjoys object-oriented art history and has researched Churchill Ettinger ski art since 2005. In the winter the family enjoys skiing at Crystal Mountain, WA.

Churchill Ettinger’s son, Tom Ettinger retired as Director of Sports Illustrated Enterprises. He enjoys upland hunting and raising champion bird dogs. In the winter, a passionate skier like his father, he can often be found at Stratton Mountain skiing the same trails his father so loved. Tom manages the artist’s estate.

This virtual event starts at 7:00 PM via ZOOM. Virtual Red Bench events remain complimentary, however, we humbly ask that you make a $10 donation to help support the museum's mission to "collect, preserve, and celebrate Vermont's rich skiing and snowboarding history.” As a nonprofit, your support is crucial to our continued mission-driven work.

The Red Bench Speaker Series presents, Tragedy in the Green Mountains; a History of Plane Crashes within Ski Area Boundaries, Thursday, October 17th at 6:30 PM at the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum.

Did you know that there have been plane crashes at Jay Peak, Pico, Magic Mountain, Mt. Snow, Stowe, and Killington?

There are thirteen known aircraft crashes inside Vermont ski area boundaries. Some happened before the trails were cut and others served as emergency landing zones when the plane got into trouble. There was a time when hang gliding at ski areas was popular, but accidents were not uncommon and soon areas prohibited the sport.

The stories of these crashes will be told by Stowe Mountain Resort Historian, Brian Lindner using photographs and information pulled from official government files.

If your curiosity is piqued like ours, we hope you’ll join us for this entertaining discussion.

Doors to the Museum will open at 6:00 PM and guests are invited to enjoy the exhibits and socialize. The discussion begins at 6:30 PM. Event admission is $10 and helps support the museum's mission to "collect, preserve, and celebrate Vermont's rich skiing and snowboarding history.”

This event is IN-PERSON at the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum, 1 South Main Street, Stowe, Vermont.

Red Bench Speaker Series: "Spider Lives" Film Screening + Discussion

  • Vermont Ski & Snowboard Museum (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The Red Bench Speaker Series and Head 2 Head present Vermont’s first film screening of Spider Lives, Thursday, September 26th at 6:30 PM at the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum.

“Spider Lives” is a documentary about Spider Sabich, an American alpine ski racer and member of the US Ski team in the 1960’s. The film chronicles Sabich’s historic career trajectory from small town racing phenom to Olympian; from World Cup winner to 2-time World Pro Tour champion, including his epic season-long battle with triple Olympic gold medalist Jean-Claude Killy for the 1973 Pro title, which came down to the final weekend on the slopes of Spider’s hometown of Aspen.

At 31 years old, Spider was at the peak of his influence as ski racing’s premier ambassador in America when he was tragically killed at his home in Aspen, Colorado in 1976.

Filmmakers, Christin Cooper, Mark Tache, Mike Hundert, and Hayden Scott were intent on bringing Spider’s story to life in a short video slated for his US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame induction. With an outburst of support, they received family photos, film clips, historic race footage, and cherished stories. Becoming more than a short video, this film takes you on a journey into the earlier years of ski racing; packed with interviews of those who lived it. “The film ended up being about a lot of things, not just a charismatic ski racer and sport,” says Cooper, “It’s kind of about how character matters, and generosity of spirit, which Spider had in spades. A lot of people were inspired by Spider, and we can still endeavor to conduct ourselves as he did. If just a few viewers are inspired to do that by this film, then Spider lives.” Spider Sabich was inducted into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of fame posthumously on April 8, 2022.

Joining us for a post film discussion is Tyler Palmer. From North Conway, NH, Tyler is a 2-time World Cup slalom winner, 1972 Olympian, and multi-WPS race winner in the tour’s Bob Beattie World Pro Ski Tour heydey. He went on to a career in insurance and ski coaching, including at Attitash and a decade out West with the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation. Tyler was inducted into the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2011.

Tyler and Spider were US teammates, close friends, and competitors and appears in the film.

Doors to the Museum open at 6:00 PM and guests are invited to enjoy the exhibits and socialize. The film begins at 6:30 PM. Tickets for this special intimate Red Bench event will be sold in advance and will be capped at 75 seats.

Lost & Found, How Independent Ski Areas Around Vermont Are Being Resurrected

The Red Bench Speaker Series presents, Lost & Found, How Independent Ski Areas Around Vermont Are Being Resurrected, Thursday, March 7th at 6:30 PM at the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum.

Vermont was once home to more than 175 ski areas. Today, most of those areas are gone but some have been brought back to life in various forms. In this discussion we’re bringing together a few of the people that have played a key role in preserving some of the formerly “lost” ski areas. These range from small ski hills to once large commercial operations such as Mount Ascutney and Magic Mountain.

Lisa Lynn, editor of Vermont Ski + Ride and Vermont Sports will moderate the discussion as representatives from ski areas around the state will talk about how they have resurrected these ski hills, the value they bring to their local communities, and the new roles they play now in both preserving Vermont’s heritage of skiing and moving it forward as these hills expand to include multiple forms of winter recreation and the development of new fundraising models.

Panelists include Steve Wood of Ascutney, William Beattie of the Dutch Hill Alliance of Skiers and Hikers, Diana Todd of Hogback Mountain, and Geoff Hatheway of Magic Mountain.
